I'm scared to use anything but Traeger pellets because I'm under my original warranty. Did you wait until after your warranty was done to start running other pellets? Just curious.
I've been using mostly Bear Mt Pellets in my Traeger. I can get them at my local Cash & Carry, which makes it convenient since I get most of my meat there too.
Mostly I've been using Apple or Cherry, since the Missus likes those the best. But I use Hickory a bit too.
The only thing to watch out for with Bear Mt (as well as all pellet) is the amount of "dust" in the bottom of the bag, try not to just dump it in the hopper. The Traegers are notorious for "gummed up" augers.
If you have a warranty issue pop up how, will anyone know what brand of pellets you used? I heat my home with a pellet stove, can't tell the difference, by appearance, between a "cooking" pellet and a "heating" pellet.I'm scared to use anything but Traeger pellets because I'm under my original warranty. Yea pretty much, I waited until my second year to try anything different, but not solely because of the warranty. I bought my Traeger from Parr lumber, and with it, I could buy as many bags of pellets for half price. I bought 8 bags! during my 2nd year with the smoker, I had a friend get a green mountain smoker, and the deal he got with it included 3 bags each of hickory and mesquite, he didn't like the flavor of the mesquite so he offered them to me. Since I VERY RARELY turn down free stuff, I took them and used them. After that, I just started buying the Bear Mt pellets. Since the 20lb bag is $5.00 cheaper, and I get the same flavor, I decided to save the money. Also Bear Mt has 33 lb bags of hickory and mesquite for about the same price as Traegers 20lb bag, I use those also.

Great question, I too am curious how they would know. The documentation is pretty clear that using anything but Traegar pellets voids the warranty. If you have a warranty issue pop up how, will anyone know what brand of pellets you used?
