II am trying to make pulled pork for the first time I am planning to smoke to 140 degrees and finish in the oven. Now I have never used a thermometer for cooking before so my question is this. I bought a meat thermometer that stays in the meat throughout cooking process and on the box it says if more cooking time is desired take thermometer out before putting back in oven. Now does this mean I have to remove the thermometer from pork when I take from smoker to oven and if so can I put it back in and finish cooking or do I have to keep checking it. Any help would be much appreciated.

What is the brand and type of thermometer?  Most thermometers can stay in the meat throughout.

It is a farberware meat/poultry thermometer. Its supposed to stay in throughout that's why I got it but on the box it says caution if more cooking time is needed be sure to take the thermometer out before placing back in oven. Check roast at desired interval

How high does it read ? Sounds like they don't want you to max it out.

I would return it and get one that goes to a higher range.  You want to take your pork but to 205 or so and cant check it with that one unfortunately.

Ok I have a digital thermometer can I put that into the butt and put in oven? And if so how far do I put the probe in. I have one that has a probe and a wire that plugs into a base.

Yes that can go in the oven.  Put it on the opposite side as the bone, in the thickest part about 3 1/2 inches or so.  Good luck.  you can see others pictures of pork butt with the probes in there to see about how far to stick in.
