I spoke with Kathryn today and I am sad to report that things are not going that well for Paul. For some reason they transferred him to the rehab facility over the weekend. She thinks it is because he told them he wanted to leave to go for a reunion with some family and friends which was planned for yesterday.
On Sunday they inserted a catheter as he was not passing fluids properly. That seemed to help some. Later in the evening, the nurse could not wake him. He had a pulse and was breathing but she could not get him to respond or wake up. They decided to transfer him to the trauma center and Kathryn said not back to KU so they sent him to Overland Park Hosp.
He is currently in Overland in the ICU ward. He is not breathing on his own and they are doing some dialysis. They have him in kind of a twilight state trying to nurse him back to more functionality and the nurse said it would be pretty painful if he were awake with all the tubes and IV connections.
The nurse in ICU was reviewing his chart and told Kathryn that the folks at KU put on his chart that the “cancer was metastasizing”. Kathryn said they never told them for sure it was cancer since they could not do the needle biopsy so how could they put that on the chart. No one has an answer.
Paul’s son tried to get answers and was given a huge run around by the KU folks and decided to call the local TV station. They are doing a complete investigation based on the things that he told them and may run a story if they can validate what has happened.
I will keep you posted as I find out more – sorry this is so long but I don’t know how to update it any other way.
