new to smoking

Hi my name is hoe and I live in Michigan. I'm new to smoking, I'm looking to build my own smoker and was looking for some ideas. I have an old snowmobile trailer and an old fuel oil tank. I was thinking about using a 55 gallon drum for a hot box but I'm worried how well it will hold up. Also wanted to know if any one had plans for a smoker that did not have a hot box and you just put the wood in the bottom of the smoker with a water tray above it. Thanks
