I cook a lot of Indian food and have always wanted a tandoor oven. After a bit of research I’d seen a way to make one from a couple of terracotta plant pots and a larger container. I kept my eyes open for some cheep plant pots and opted for a bargain dustbin (I’m in the U.K.) for the outer vessel. After drilling ventilation holes in the base of the pot and the bin, I packed it out with a vermiculite/cement mix to provide loads of insulation. With a grinder and a drill, the whole thing took less than two hours to make (but a week for the cement to cure). The initial cook wasn’t great, but some tweaks to the airflow arrangement have made a hell of a difference. It’s great fun to cook with, and cost approximately $60.00 to make.
