92 years old and still going strong! I smoked a 21 pound bird for the family gathering today. Since we couldn't go, my mother-in-law picked it up to take out there.

Mom in law just texted me this pic...

    Yep, a couple of times!

She turned over the meat cooking to me about 5 years ago. The ONLY reason she did, was because she can't lift like she used to!

She's a great lady and still runs her farm. She cracked and sold over 500 pounds of pecans this year. I snuck some when she wasn't looking last time we were out. Gonna make the bride a pecan pie later.

That's great! I make great Turkey but Grandma truely made magic in a hundred year old Coal fired stove. She could cook a 20 Bird, 2 Pies and Bread, at the same time, in that Monster!. No thermometers. Stuck here hand in to tell temp and could tell what was done by look and smell. A lost art!...JJ

It truly is a lost art! Thinking back, I don't know how they did half of what was accomplished in the kitchen around the holidays.

What a lovely picture Cranky!  Beautiful woman!   Now that makes my Thanksgiving complete.  So many memories.

My mom lived to over a 100, and she was just as beautiful as yours.  I think age, and the never stop doing things, is what made them wonderful.

Like JJ's Mom, my mother cooked many years on an old Home Comfort cast iron stove.  Turkey in at night with enough coals to keep it cooking until morning, then stoke and add wood to finish the bird and skin, cook pies, sides, and such.  I'd give anything to have that old stove back again along with it's recipe book.  It had some great recipes in it and some how it got lost.  None of us remaining kids can find it.

Pump your Mom for all the info you can get.  Believe me, after they are gone, you be saying many, many times,

"I wish I could ask Mom.   She'd know!"

Funny you said that! She always comments on how it's funny that a turkey smells like a ham!

I've saved this picture and plan to frame it to hang in the breakfast nook.
