I finally got around to cookin up my first ever Tri-tip. I've actually never really EATEN Tri-tip, let alone cook it :)

As some may know from my prior threads, I bought a brand new Weber 22.5" kettle, and I decided to break it in with some BEEF.

Turned out DELICIOUS. Enjoy!

Here's the USDA Choice Tri-tip from Costco, seasoned with kosher salt, fresh cracked black pepper and garlic powder:

Charcoal Chimney at work... the flames would NOT go down, and kept burning like a wild fire! Any tips for that?

Seared ~3 mins per side over direct heat, with some Hickory chips added:

Indirect Heat for ~30 mins until hit 135F internal temp:

After resting under foil tent for 15 mins with carry-over temp to 141F:

Sliced and ready to eat!

Now shlongstar how can you live in calif, and this be the first time you ever had Tri-tip? But you have now been baptized with one of Calif. main contributions to Americana cuisine, we luvems the tri-tip.

Thanks for the Qview, the meat looks awesome and the pics are great.

We like to throw on some baby red potatoes that have been tossed in a mixture of EVOO some BBQ seasoning, garlic mix, and little extra kosher salt and pepper, sounds like a lot but really just enough to give the tators a light coating, put them on the cold side of your cooking grate, as close to fire as possible if they start to brown move the further away from fire, cook until done. You will learn the timing with experience. These are so tasty you won't need any butter or sauce. If you can't find baby reds use medium size and half them. If I'm in a hurry I cook them in the microwave until almost done then do the seasoning thing and then into the kettle. The microwave method makes it easy to always have the tators done on time.

really nice looking slab o' beef there, perfectly cooked to the temp I like.

Looks awesome! got my mouth watering. I wish the tri tips werent so expensive here. I cooked dang near one a week when I lived out there.

Haha, yeah I have no idea how I never really had tri-tip before. Orange County isn't much of a BBQ locale.

Thanks for the comments, I can't wait to make the next one.

Thunderdome- I did mean to cut it into longer strips (against the grain), but I was too excited to eat it and cut it wrong
