BBQ withdrawl in Ontario

  1. Hi guys!  It's my first post, but I've already learned a lot from searching this forum.  I am originally from FL and love my BBQ and fried food, but after moving to Ontario, have had to wait for trips to Syracuse (Dinosaur BBQ) and FL to get my fix.  

    I'm a lifelong propane griller (I know, sacrilege).  I've been using the same cheapy model charbroil for 10 years.  Replaced the burners a number of times and just kept plugging away.  I don't stop grilling when the snow falls, but it's been tough keeping it at good temps here in the winter.  A recent windstorm relieved me of that old grill, smashing up the frame when it blew off the deck.  I could have fixed it, but it was just time...

    I am not ready to make the full transition to charcoal only, but have been itching to get a smoker for years (my wife and I actually had it on our gift registry).  So I took this opportunity to "get 2 birds stoned".  I've picked up a Chargriller Grillin' Pro 3001 and the SFB.  When the setup is complete, I'll still have my on-demand propane grill for quick meals after work, but with the bonus of having a smoker for days off.

    I've taken a lot of notes from this forum and have made most of the suggested mods for the smokin' pro.  I've also adapted the propane parts to be removable during the smoking process.  It was a bit of a struggle since I have little to no metal working experience, but I think it is turning out well.  Waiting on my friend to weld up the charcoal basket and the angle iron to seal the lid and then it should be ready for seasoning.  

    I'll be sure to post a thread of the build with pre-seasoning pics.  I can almost taste the pork, brisket and ribs now!

Thanks for the welcome.  I've been abusing that search bar for a few weeks now.  So much useful info on here if you are willing to look.  I've been on the horn today rounding up a bunch of wood.  Secured some local grapevine, ash, maple and applewood in just a few hours and only have to pay for the maple.  Also found out that the Rona (Canadian imitation of HD and Lowes) one block from my house has Maple Leaf brand lump, one of the most highly rated on nakedwhiz.  With the woodpile in the backyard and the lump around the corner, it won't be much work to fuel the fire.  Bacon grease, lard and vegetable oil are all lined up and ready for seasoning, just waiting another week on some parts...

  9. Wife's doing a PhD at Queens.  Being a FL native, I don't love the cold, but it's a great town otherwise!
