Using Oak stump grind

I need to have a freshly downed oak tree stump ground down.  Can I dry and use this wood chip for smoking?

I fear you will have an awful lot of sand or gravel in the mix.

That is a good point.  I was going to attempt to collect some of the stump grind before they started digging at the dirt level.  Might just be too much work for what I might get out of it.

If you have access to a chainsaw and there is still enough of the trunk left, you might consider cutting off 1-2" thick wafers. Let them cure and then take a hatchet to them. That will give you some really nice chunks.

Even if you collect the wood chips, they need to be dried and aged. What Themole mentioned, the wafers, is what my buddy cuts for me. They are great to have, easy to dry and very easy to chunk up after they dry and age.

Be careful if using a chainsaw to grind the stump as you are likely to contaminate the chips with chain lubricating oil. This will not taste good!

When using the chainsaw simply to cut logs the amount of oil on the wood will be minimal, however if you are collecting the chips produced by the saw then depending on the saw the contamination will probably be much higher

X2  they make food grade bar oil, have even seen some use veg oil.  On the other hand, they also make bar oil with some sort of enzyme that will speed up the natural rotting of the stump so removal is not required. I don't think that stuff would be too good for ya.  Be careful
