So I had Friday planned as a honey do list day and Mrs C says why don’t we break out the boat……so out it came…..

So after a made scramble to get the the gear cleaned up and installed new batteries (10 years on the old ones….not more trust) got up to the lake after lunch and set 10 pots along the honey hole……they went in at 3 so this will be a short soak…..also trying 2 different tilapia as bait…..

Bing 3 hours later scored 17 nice crawlers! The water is still cold and interesting enough didn’t get any in the pots above 30ft depth….all the catches were around 38-40 feet!

Bingo all cleaned up….these were a little muddier than usual so once the crab boil was hot did a quick rinse…..bingo all cleaned

Cooked till the body was 145 then chilled them…..then in the fridge as it was midnight…..

Claws holy CLAWS!!!!
IMG_3793.jpeg

Bing to spread…..crawlers, split lobster, shrimp, snow crab, onion, Yukons, andouille, boil eggs, corn, and lemon slices! All this was dressed with a garlic butter sauce!
IMG_3801.jpeg

Oh and the money shot with chopped parsley…….holy crap this was a feast!!!!

Pot stock, water, old bay, Cajun seasoning , onion a whole lemon in slices, white wine vinegar, chicken base, hot sauce…..started with spuds and sausage slices, when the spuds were almost done…..in go the corn, after a few min, pre-boiled eggs, then the crab, followed by the crawlers, lobster, and then shrimp….the trick is not to over cook the shrimp…..

The garlic butter sauce….
2-sticks of butter,
5ish or more crushed garlic cloves use 10 if you want to sleep on the couch…..
Old bay
Cajun seasoning
Hot sauce
Worcestershire
White wine vinegar
Smoked paprika
Chicken base
1/4c boil liquid….
All this is blended in just as the boil is really to pull…..you don’t want the water to fully boil out in the butter….it keeps the blend creamy like…..

I've only ever harvested crawdads by hand in the creeks and a rock reservoir. I'll be it could trap them in those creeks. May need to try that. The good sounds and looks amazing. Great pics

Wow...crawfishing at 40 ft! Cajuns would think they were catching 'Chinese Crawfish' !!! LOL!!!!
Go deep go big or go home! The water to at that depth is more consistent…..still too cold for the shallows!

We have them in all our creeks rivers and lakes….potting them is the easy way!

Those are huge.
Native or introduced?

Not to speak for Civil, as he is local and may know more, but it appears the crawfish in the Idaho lakes are invasive. These look to be the Rusty Crawfish...
iu

Rusty is the species moving up the great lakes chain.

They are “Signal” and are an invasive species, but they feed lots of bass! By the way the Signal are known for large claws and they can walk over ground for several miles to find water……

Ah...gotcha. Well, I looked them up just because I had never heard of the signal crawfish before. Seems they are native to Idaho on the Idaho DNR website...
https://idfg.idaho.gov/species/taxa/26555

And from google AI..
The average size of the signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) in Idaho is typically between 6 to 9 cm (2.4 to 3.5 inches) long, but they can grow up to 16 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) in length

8" is a huge crawfish! Little lobsters indeed!!

Well there you go….the ones on top are 5-6 inch range the claws are 3 ish inches. They are extremely tasty….better than the lobster….

No catch limit by the way….just size restrictions on the trap, # of traps (5 per license), and soak time.

Looking good Civil

Point for sure
Chris

@indaswamp Ok, just happened to have a scalable item in the pic....

Ok so none we caught were under 4".....The little one just below the worm container is about 4 inches and any smaller than that get tossed back. Extrapolating means most were in the 5-inch range with 2-3 in the 6-6.5 range.

I have never seen them here in LI or PA, only ones I have seen came from the pet shop.

I remember something being marketed as blue lobsters. They were about the size of mud-bugs except they were a nice shade of blue.

I had and bred some of those in my tanks years ago...they are cool

What a cool post and what a great meal - one of my faves at our house for sure.

Dang, they look like small lobsters!
Nicely done!
Al
Thanks Al! Yea land locked lobsters they are. The claw meat in a few of these was bigger than the tail meat, oh and tasty!

They are pretty dang hardy so they probably are just hiding from ya.

I've only seen pics of blue lobsters and blue crawlers. I think they might freak me out catching one....LOL
