Here's the build pics from my finished (almost!) double barrel smoker. Rain has delayed everything a bit but let me know what you guys think. I don't know how to weld or have access to a welder so the fab is a little rough, plus I inherited the top barrel for free so I needed to seal...
So I cut and fitted my piping on my double barrel build yesterday before the rain set in. I am planning on using gasket rope for the lid seals but am more curious about what's the best option for sealing the pipe to barrel connection? Since the pipe is stationary it shouldn't be a problem...
Is there a particular reason - other than readily available 6" stove pipe - that 6" is the only(?) diameter used in double barrel builds?
I took a look at some today for my build but they seemed huge! Would decreasing the size to 4" not conduct enough heat?

I took a look at some today for my build but they seemed huge! Would decreasing the size to 5" or even 4" not conduct enough heat?
I've got some barrels and a decent setup idea for a double barrel build. As I've been looking at all the builds I have seen the same diagram with stacked barrels, stope pipe coming up the center bottom from the firebox to the smokebox(barrel) with dual exhaust out the sides. From reading it...
So, I threw two massive spare racks on the UDS today and temp was hanging out a little high @ 275* for about two hours so I decided to foil and put back on. I lifted off the lid to pull the racks off and as soon as I had them foiled and ready to go back on <5 min the coals had caught fire and...
I'm hoping to get some feedback on a new smoker build idea. I have 3 55gal drums that I'm looking to use. I have no welder and a limited budget. I built a 30gal UDS previously but need a larger smoking area, which is why i picked up some 55g drums this time. In order to eliminate cuts and...
I found a great deal on Craigslist for some 55g drums @$10 each... or so I thought. I bought three of them and drove 45 min away to grab them only to find out then from the gentleman that they contain flammable liquid inside.
How screwed am I?
A few years ago I build a UDS out of a 30gal...
Glad to have found the forum! My wife and I live in Hot Springs - until the end of this month - when we will move to Chattanooga, TN. I've been smoking for about 4 years now on a hodgepodge of random accoutrements. Most currently I've got a 30gal UDS that has done well for me but am currently...
