Hi all. I'm really just trying to get into smoking meats. I have an old bullet smoker with a propane conversion kit. I couldn't ever get the temperature low enough with that thing so I gave up and put it away and have always used my gas grill to smoke since although I couldn't get it to stay below 300 degrees it was easier to use than the bullet smoker and it's no trouble to put a nice long rack of ribs in the back of the grill with only the front burner on with some wood chips in a foil pouch. I couldn't fit a full rack of ribs in a bullet smoker.
I want to buy a new smoker and I'd like some advice on which one to get. There is a gas smoker forum and an electric smoker forum, but not one for people who don't know which they want. I don't wnat to mess with wood or charcoal, and I'd like to keep the cost down to around a couple of hundred dollars or less. I want to set it and forget it as much as possible. I'm looking at both the GOSM widebody or a similar gas smoker or something like the Masterbuilt electric. From what I'm reading it sounds to me like it's easier to control the temps with propane. Is that true? And I'm not sure which would be more expensive to operate. My guess would be that propane would be more expensive. Anyone have any pointers for me? Mostly I like to smoke ribs, brisket, and pork shoulder, but I'd like to expand my horizons some.
Also, is there a way to spell check in these forums? For some reason I can't even cut and paste into a word processor from this screen. Maybe that has something to do with Windows Vista being on my new machine or something. I've never had this problem before.
