Mes and wood chunks

Hi,
I have yet another question will a MES with an 850watt heater get hot enough to smoke with chunks instea of chip i want to try oak which is a very common wood where i live i have 4 cords of it in my yard and wanted to know if i can cut chunks or am i gonna have to break down into chips
