Hello from Kentucky

  1. Hi All -- my name is Woody (45/KY) and I'm new to the forum, though I've enjoyed the newsletter for some time.  I did some lurking before signing up -- great information on this site, so thanks to all who have posted to help newbies and pros alike.

I'm not really a newbie, but far from being an expert.  I cut my teeth on a Char-Griller Smokin' Pro rig before moving up to a new Horizon Classic (LOVE IT!).  I keep a Broil Mate gas grill on the deck to get me through quick meals and cold weather, but I plan to keep smoking season going into next winter...though that may be spring fever talking.

I'm looking forward to "meeting" a lot of great people on this site and sharing lots of good information.

In the meantime:  I used the Horizon rig for the first time this weekend...here are the results:

  7. Good to see a fellow Kentuckian on here.  I looked at Horizon's smokers before I bought my Southfork, man they are nice.

Are there any 'que related stores in Lexington?  Supplies and whatnot.

  10. Hey Ryan -- no, there really aren't any good outlets in Lexington.  You can find a few things at the outdoor living/patio stores, but the selection is pretty limited and normally not what I'm after.  I've been scouting around to see who carries what brands of lump but have been disappointed so far.  The Cowboy from Lowes or Home Depot is fine, but I'd like to try some others too.  I HAVE noticed that Lowes and Home Depot have started carrying more smoking woods (chunks and chips) -- where before you could only find hickory or mesquite, now I'm seeing some apply, cherry and the like.

My guess is -- your selection in Louisville is probably better than I have here.  I've ordered most of my stuff -- thermometers, gloves, rotisserie kit, covers, etc. from the manufacturer or other websites.

Let's get some more Kentucky guys on here and we can start a group!
