Just got my first smoker, one of those vertical propane jobs from Wal-Mart. Made my first ribs last weekend and they were a DISASTER. SO I'll probably be asking for a lot of advice. I know a lot about rubs, but the smoking process is all new to me. And, being in Tampa, I plan to make this a year-round hobby.

Welcome to the forum Doug. Ask all the question you need to get it figured out. Lots of qualified friendly people here to give you the answers you need. Check out Jeff's 5-Day ecourse to help you along.

My first two (and only two) were terrible too. But keep reading around and asking questions before you even take the ribs out of the fridge and lots of people here will give you solid advice.

Hi Doug. glad you decided to join us at the SMF. Be sure and checkout Jeff's 5 day ecourse, good basic reading, also check out the pork section as it has plenty of feedback on ribs.

Welcome Doug. Lots of friendly folks here so don't hesitate to ask questions, share your adventures, or simple use the vast amount of information contained here. Most of all have fun.

Welcome aboard Doug!

Try the 3-2-1 method on your ribs next time... it is almost fool proof and the ribs come out fantastic! Basically, 3 hours in the smoke, 2 hours wrapped in foil, 1 hour back on the grates to firm them up. These are just guidelines, not exact. Click on the 3-2-1 Method in the left column of the main page... that will get you started!

Have fun!

I learned to do ribs before I found SMF but lots of the folks on here talk about the 3-2-1 method. I personally don't foil my ribs until done then I plastic wrap & foil them for their rest. Because so many talk about the 3-2-1 I recommend that you try that & work from there. I also agree with the suggestion of trying the 5-day ecourse, excellent info for someone new to smoking
