I'm looking at building my own smoker and I'm looking at file cabinets as a possible option.

I would primarily use it for jerky (I typically hang my jerky strips off of skewers) and the square drawers seem like a perfect option for me to use.

My main concern is that there would be some odd off-gassing of the paint or something and I don't want to taint what I'm making.  But maybe there's an option?

What do you guys think?

Also I would probably use a cast iron skillet and hot plate for the heat source/smoke.

Hello 3672, Sounds like you have an interesting build idea going on.

You're spot on with  the paint being an issue, so unless you have a easy way to remedy that obstacle? Maybe look at a used 55 gal drum build option? It might be a little more user friendly over trying to convert your filing cabinets? Even an old out of service appliance? Lot's of great build projects floating around here on those smoker builds.
