Convince me not to buy this, so my wife doesn't kill me.

  1. I'm 90% sure I want to risk the wrath of my wife and go slightly over budget for this - Smoke Daddy Pellet Pro® Deluxe Stainless Steel Pellet BBQ Grill - Model 1190

Here are my needs - 80% of the time I will be smoking for dinner for 2.  10 % of the time I will be smoking bacon, I would like to do 4 whole bellies at a time at least.  5% of the time I will be cooking for groups of 10.  5% of the time it will be for 15-20 people.

I picked this because it has a top rack, which would allow me to but in more pork belly, or maybe make some snacks on the top rack while my bellies smoke.

    Is this overkill?

    Is it worth it?

    Toddzio,

There are times when that old saying "Better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission" comes into play. This sounds like one of those times. Order it, prepare for the wrath, man up to it, and it will pass.

    Good Luck.

I think it's overkill in size considering 80% of the time you'll be cooking for 2, and because I believe that pellet smokers do a poor job for bacon. I have a Memphis Elite, but I still use my vertical gas smoker for bacon.

Wait...Has She ever come home with some Jimmy Choo's when Payless has perfectly nice footwear? You both are entitled to a Treat Yourself purchase at least once a year...JJ

  6. Can you elaborate why you found your pellet smoker did a bad job on bacon?

  7. I have the smoke daddy pellet hopper assembly on a retro smoke and love it. Great controller that holds temp with 5 degrees but most of the time better. I can't stop you.. lol

If I was in the market for a complete pellet grill/smoker it's what I'd buy... I believe he's says it doesn't do well for bacon because pellet smokers/grills tend to not produce the amount of smoke people are use to.

As Anglerman suggested, the smoke profile isn't strong enough for bacon IMO. Smoke is fine for longer cooks, but I don't get enough for the shorter cook times on a slab of bacon. The PelletPro does run at lower temps than my Memphis, so cook times could be longer, but I prefer cold smoking bacon anyway.

If it were me, I'd get the PG 500. Perfect for smaller families, but big enough for a larger group. Also has great direct grill capabilities, but not sure you need that. Also a few hundred $$ more than what you're looking at.

  9. I have had my Yoder YS640 for over three years and find the smoke flavor fine. If I need to change it up I use a tube smoker to add flavor. I do brisket usually taking 15-20 hours and running with hickory in my AMPTS gives it more than enough smoke flavor. Granted you're going to pay more but I see no problem with it lasting 10 years or longer. The smoker is made from 10 gauge steel and the hopper is made from 14 gauge.

How about a nice Weber 18.5 smoker ? You can use a grill off to the side to do some overflow work.

Well my wife didn't kill me when I bought an $1,800.00 grill. Hopefully you will be as lucky as I was. BTW It doesn't matter if it's overkill, ask yourself this, will you be happy with anything less, I don't think so.

Hit that dam button now before its too late.

Check the lowest temperature the pellet grill will operate at....    I cold smoke bacon at 50-70 F, then cook it when I'm ready to eat it...
