22" WSM Leaning tower of heartache

Discussion in 'Charcoal Smokers' started by matthewstultz, Jun 7, 2016.

  1. Good afternoon, all.  I have a WSM with the lid mod to hold the lid in place when you need to address something inside the smoker.  The problem is that the smoker becomes so top heavy that it tips out of the base and spills any liquid from the water pan and even trashes the meat currently in the smoker.

I cannot find a way to get this to settle down.  I like the lid mod but I also like to eat what I cook and not have to scrape it up from the concrete patio.  I'm pretty discouraged and could really use some ideas on how to make this work.  I just tried a clamp but with the extra lip and curve it wouldn't like up.  Any and all suggestions are welcome.  Thanks.

Glad you posted...was just looking at the hinges. Where did you get yours from?

  3. I think it came directly from the company but it is also on Amazon.  It is really beefy but it really messes with the balance.

Can you post a pic of where it separates?

Yes. I cannot picture what you mean

  6. I think the lid is too heavy, once opened and hanging from the hinge, and topples the barrel(middle) section from the base.

Ah OK. It now has had a hinge attaching the lid to the body. Now I can see what the problem is.

  8. I'm just guessing since OP mentioned a lid mod.

  10. Yep.  this is what is happening!

  11. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!  Thanks for the idea for the door clamps.  I have three ordered.  What size bolt did you use?

It's not my setup. Maybe if you look at the thread I found it on, it will say the size.

This may be a naive question, and I apologise in advance if it is, but why did you decide to hinge the lid onto the body of the WSM? I have had a 22" WSM in the past and now have a ProQ (similar to the WSM) and the versatility of being able to twist the lid to adjust the direction of the top vent depending on what I was cooking inside (especially large joints or whole turkeys that nearly filled the chamber) was something I used regularly. Personally I can see little benefit of hinging the lid and several distinct drawbacks.

  14. The decision was for taking the lid off and what to do with a hot lid around the pool with kids in the vicinity. I use a BBQ IQ so the venting isn't as essential.

  15. I'll take a look. Thank you.

  16. I bought 1 1/2" machine screws and a 1" nylon spacers.  That should hold nicely.
