So initially I was going to buy a Pecos or OK Joe smoker and mod it. I finally stumbled on a propane tank which I believe is about 90 gallons and plan on having a fabricator put it together based on my specs. I've drawn up some rough blueprints and would appreciate any advice you guys have before I hand them off. I would like to get 2 cooking grates inside this thing but I'm not sure if there is enough room.
It's an age old question, but have you considered  an RF build with three rack positions? I ask because I just recently got mine to about 90% complete and it so much better that the two offsets I had before. Granted they were store bought brinkman and chargriller, but the heat management with an RF plate seems to be stupid simple to me.

This is my rig before I welded the RF plate in.

Nice smoker! I haven't considered reverse flow. Trying to keep it simple I suppose.

I was playing with the feldon calculator because I have access to 6" 1/4" thick pipe. I may have to change the firebox size to 24" square which is drastically changing my stack heights. Initially the builder was going to use 4" which called for a 32" stack height for a firebox 18"x24"x18". These height numbers are way higher for the bigger firebox. Should I go 4", or 6"? And how high would you recommend?

Also found 1/4" thick 5" pipe as well. So I guess my question is should I stick to the Feldons recommendations based on the firebox size? 5" pipe for a 24" square firebox is calling for 35" height. 6" calling for 25".

UPDATE - I got the 5" pipe and cut it at 36". If you guys think this is too long I can cut it down.

In my opinion a 24" square firebox is too large for a 24" 48" chamber that comes in at nearly twice the size needed.

A 20" x 22" x 20" square firebox with the 5" ID pipe for exhaust 24" tall is much more balanced.

The only reason I was going with the 24" was because I mistakenly bought a damper slide setup that's 24" long. I suppose it could be modified. Your dimensions would be 22" wide, correct?

Agreed. I have a 20 x 18 x 18 with a 21" (60 gallon) chamber. The fire box is plenty big enough. The 20 x 22 should do you well.

RF is not very complicated. I made my rf plate with two pieces of 3/16 square plate.

I'm looking forward to your build. Good luck

The material pile is starting to build up. Still waiting on my hinges and thermometers from Kat's BBQ which were ordered on the 3rd and just shipped today.. can't wait to get this thing done. Stainless steel for the cooker grates, and the 1/8" strip steel i got for the doors is 2" - is that ok? I think I read that most people use 1".

I know I haven't gotten a lot of action in this thread, but I'd still like to share the final product. Won't get to cook with it until next weekend unfortunately. Thanks again @kam59
Who says ya gotta cook anything..... I'd be burning wood and makin  smoke every night, drinking cold longnecks and talking to the pit. ALL my neighbors would know there was a new pit in town!!  Hell I might even pull a pillow out there and sleep next to her. LOL

Looks like a really sweet pit. Congrats.

haha.. I've been drinking beers with a break in fire for about 3 hours now. I'm completely fascinated by it.

Most folks don't want to take the time to develop that one on one affection with pits anymore, they want to just plug and play.

Its just a great life isn't it..........A little smoke is almost as good as a cute little puppy.

Nice build make sure to include fire box pics this weekend when it's going thanks

Very clean build.  Lots of nice little details that have obviously taken time to fabricate..

I have some new plans and designs coming soon for 120 gallon builds.     stay tuned.
