Good morning, good afternoon or good evening, wherever you are.  My name is Darrin.  I'm pretty new to this website, was sent the link by a HS friend of mine.  I've been perusing it the last several days, especially the build section.  It really seems like a great place with a bunch of good people who love good food, making it and eating it.

My brother and I entered our first BBQ competition on Memorial Day weekend, and we've been obssessing ever since.  I've had a little CharGriller for a few years and have always enjoyed using it as a smoker and a grill and thought I did a good job on it.  I realized after reading quite a bit that though it's not a horrible smoker, my ninja bbq skills are not quite up to snuff.  We are looking at building a trailer mounted smoker rig.  We have the opportunity for a free propane tank, but are looking at the option of a BIG compressor tank, or possibly an old refrigerator type.  I like the idea of not blowing up.  The horizontal tank will be a RF type, still working out the possibilities for the refrigerator type.

At any rate, I just wanted to introduce myself and give a little bbq background.  Have a great day.

Darrin welcome to SMF glad you decided to join us. Good luck on the new build and don't forget to take lots of pics for us. Have fun and good luck with the build

howdy darrin,

welcome to the site. lots of good info on builds to be found here . keep us updated w/ some pics

welcome! glad you checked us out! there is a TON of build info on here to help you with whatever build you decide to pursue. the propane tank sounds like a great idea for a trailer build. there are alot of people on here who have done that exact build and they turned out great. make sure and ask any questions you have even if you think they sound silly because i'm almost certain that there are other people who have the same question as you do. and as i always say," the only stupid question is a question not asked"

hope to see some qview!

Thank you for the warm welcome.  Glad to be here.  The propane tank trailer smoker is not going to happen.  BUT, that's only because today I scored a 48" long 36" diameter tank.  I think it's either 3/16 or 1/4 steel.  It's already had a square hole cut in it with a torch, so I know I'm not going to blow myself up when I cut a door.  :-)  Best, part was it cost me all of $20 and he set it in the back of my truck.  It will probably be a better fit for the small trailer we are getting to put it on.

that will be a sweet smoker! i have started gathering the materials for a build similar but only 30" dia. by 48 long. knowing the size of mine, you could fit 3 racks in that easily! i'm looking forward to watching your build!

Welcome to the SMF. Glad to have you here. Lots of good folks, great recipes and knowledge. Looking forward to your first qview.

Bayou:

We placed fifth among the amateur teams.  Not bad for our first competition and knowing that we have a lot of room for improvement.  My brother made a great sauce and I did the smoking.  I think his end of the deal was held up better than mine, but I'm learning and enjoying the learning.  It got us excited about it though and really, it's tough to find a better time than cooking, drinking beer and listening to live music.  Met some nice people too.

First off welcome Darrin to SMF. You'll like it here cause there are alot of really good folks that would just love to help you with anything to do with smoking. Now we like having new folks here to give a new prospective on some of the ways we do things around here. Now if you are really new then I would suggest that you sign up fir the 5-day E-course it free and it will give you the basics on smoking and a few recipes too. Here's a link to it:

http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/forum/list/127

then you will have a method to your newly found madness and believe me it will be a madness. Then when you start smoking things you will have to learn how to post the pictures / Qview

here. So here's a link to a tutorial on how to post your Qview so we can see what your doing.

 http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/forum/thread/82034/how-to-post-qview-to-smf

Now the next thing you have to do is run out and get something to smoke. Then just smoke it and if you have any questions just post  them here and we will answer all your questions that you might have. Oh yea there's no stupid questions we were all there in the beginning and we just really like to help others enjoy the fabulous smoked foods that we do. So again
