Hey folks, just wanted to share something that’s been working surprisingly well for me lately.

I usually leave my Blackstone out year-round (yeah, I know 😅), and cleaning it before every cook was getting old.. rust, leaves, occasional bird “gifts”... you name it. I picked up a silicone mat to cover the top and it's been a game-changer. Keeps moisture out, no rust issues so far, and I don’t have to re-season every time I want to fire it up.

I was honestly skeptical at first, but it lays flat and seals up the top nicely. Bonus: no more fighting with those big, bulky canvas covers when it’s windy.

Anyone else tried something like this? Would love to hear how you keep your setup protected off-season.

If anyone's curious, I grabbed mine here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CDQLM2W...D6CD786F0_afap_abs&ref_=aa_maas&tag=maas&th=1

Looks kinda cool. I have a Camp Chef & just keep the top seasoned like cast iron. The only problem I see is if any moisture got under the silicone, the metal would rust quickly. I think I would just keep the top oiled & use the factory metal cover. That way you would get air flow, and then a quick wipe with a paper towel and your ready to use it again.

I have the same problem with my Blackstone in the fish shak. It didn’t come with a top. Used to cover with a chunk of outdoor upholstery- but the wind would blow off occasionally. I bought the same mat as you a couple weeks ago, but feared the water issue as well - soooo built a top out of scraps I had laying around. It’s overkill for sure lol but it should last my lifetime if I keep it protected. The fish shak has a top but open sides so wind and sideways rain can affect things.

Appreciate the feedback, Al! Totally get your concern, I actually thought the same at first. But the mat I use has a snug fit that keeps moisture out, not in. As long as the griddle is dry and lightly oiled before covering, it stays in great shape.

I’ve left mine covered through rain and humidity with no rust coming back — and definitely less hassle than dealing with foil or random covers. Just peel it off, quick wipe, and you're good to go.

Thanks again for the insight, always love hearing how other folks take care of their setups!

That fish shak setup is awesome, love the woody vibes! And that DIY top looks solid, definitely built to last.

Totally hear you on the sideways rain and wind, that’s exactly why I ended up getting the silicone mat. I had the same issue with covers flying off or water sneaking in from the sides. The mat fits well on the griddle surface, and doesn’t budge even with strong wind. Just pop it on after cleaning and you're good, no extra weight or woodwork needed.

But man, your setup is next level, respect for building something that’ll outlast all of us!

I have the black silicone cover like yours. After my grill cools off I oil it and toss the cover on with the metal lid. My grill is covered but open on the sides. I've had no rust problems on the cooking surface side. I have to work on the sides and bottom every so often. By work on I mean lift griddle up wipe off and spray with oil then heat it up.

That’s awesome to hear, sounds like we’ve got the same routine! I do the same thing: light oil after each cook, toss on the silicone cover, and I haven’t had any rust issues either. It’s such a simple step but makes a huge difference over time.
Also appreciate you sharing your process with the sides and bottom, definitely smart maintenance.
