You can still plug any running hard disk with a bad os into another system and extract data. I keep a usb sata/ide adapter in the truck for doing this. The extra partitions don't really give you any data security; but can be helpful to some to organize things. More of a user preference.
 
i've had this dell for seven year's now,used the high dollar antivirus software
been infected with trojan's and other trash,had to hunt down the garbage and remove it myself,i finally went with the free avg antivirus from download .com and i leave my computer on 24-7 now,and i've had zero problems since,luck i think not.

For my clients I use trend micro, it has a good balance of protection, annoyance/overprotection, and resource usage.

For my personal machine I don't use any antivirus. I just don't install viruses. If you don't run any executable from untrusted sources, you just don't get them. My customers usually pick them up from sites where they are watching naughty stuff or trying to download copyrighted material; or they get lured in via email.
