Would this be a good choice for a new smoker to be used primarily for smoking sausages?  I see where the lowest setting is 160 degrees....I'd like to make 20-25 lb batches, what smoker would be recommended for me to upgrade from my old rusted char griller that I fight with to hold any temperature?

You can use a propane smoker for smoking sausages. It's not quite set and forget. You can get better and lower temp control by installing a needle valve to control the flow of propane. once again not quite set and forget. If you are wanting a set and forget I'd look at an electric smoker, or maybe one of the Smokin-it pellet smokers.

I use a propane smoker with a needle valve and I can get temps down to 120°-130° High temps 500°+.  But  Ido have to watch it. Mainly on the lower end, as wind effects it more when the flame is low.

thanks for the advice, and actually I don't even know what I want.  There are too many options, and too many people to say good and bad things about the same smokers for me to make a confident purchase.  I'll heed your warning about the propane since that was something that had me concerned about set and forget, which I would like to have....I think.

It's very hard to keep a propane smoker at low temps, as the flame tends to go out.

I have a SV 24 & tried it a few times.

So I use a MES 40 for making sausage & bacon & it works very well.

If you are handy and have some time, you could build your own propane smoker with a temperature controller.  On mine I built it with the option to use an electric hotplate in it as well, that is easily controlled with a cheap STC1000 PID controller.  This way I can hold temperature as low as just above freezing (when it is freezing cold outside) up to really hot.  The cost of the actual smoker will vary with how you build it, but I would say that the guts of the propane burner, with the control valve, and temp controller will run around $200 with parts bought off ebay, etc.  For the electric controller with the hotplate, about $40.  Being able to control your smoker temperature with very little babysitting is awesome.  Let me know if you are interested in seeing my set up, I can get some pics.

Love my electric. Totally set and forget. And it had no issue maintaining 225 at 10 outside(wasnt windy)  Controller goes down to 100 and up to 275.  Hang a couple racks of ribs in it plugged into the rv then walked down to lake and fished for a couple hours. Cant do that with propane or charcoal. You wont get the smoke ring as good with electric for some reason but thats just visual anyhow.  Does really good on the step up smoking with sausages. GET a amazin smoke box!!!  You will have to get your chips smoking with a torch at low temps.
