Well after seeing everyone using their UDS I decided that I needed to make one for myself. I picked up my barrel last week and burned it out last weekend and after a few nights of tinkering on it after work I am smoking on it as we speak.

I am hoping to find some better high temp paint. The stuff I have on it now is for engine headers and it seems to want to rub off on your hands or anything for that matter. Anyone have any other suggestions for high temp paint? This stuff is good up to 1500 degrees. But it does say you need to cure it a bit so hopefully once I bring the temps up on it things will get better. I have a 14 lb turkey in it right now and I am doing ribs tomorrow. I can't wait to see how this thing cooks. So far its holding temps pretty good. I found out the hard way to not leave the lid off for very long when putting in your meat/probes. Shot up to 400 degrees in no time. Thanks for looking at my build.

Here is the thread with my Turkey Q

Everything looks awesome and you say it holds temp really well. Thats a big thing with your smokes. So we should be getting some more Qview later with your turkey then???[IMG]

The UDS looks real nice, however the snow sure don't.Just finished mine also(cept paint) heating it after your first coat will help,I'm on my 2nd coat of primer - heating each time.

I just bought 3 cans of Duplicolor engine paint from Checker and a can of clear. Only $22 bucks so not bad.
Make sure you sand it down good first.
You shouldn't need the primer with your header paint on there.

    Happy smokin!

  7. Drums are GREAT!!! What are you using for the ash pan?

    Nice drum!!

[IMG] on the Duplicolor recomendation. That's what I used too. Here's a link to my paint thread.

I primered mine first but don't remember it wanting to rub off before the first cook. It does need to be cured though. Mine has been through several cooks and if I get it really hot you can smell the paint a little bit.

At normal smoking temps it is fine but if I'm doing chicken I'll sometimes let it get wild to crisp the skin. [IMG]

Nice looking drum, congrats! I used Rustoleum high heat bbq black myself. Is your ash pan a galvanized drain pan? If so I wouldnt use that you might get sick from the fumes.

How did the casters end up working out??

The Casters are a little sketchy. They work but they like to fall off the lip of the drum. I think I might try and find three pieces of metal or something to connect the three together that way they won't fall off.

The best high-temp paint I found for my smoker was from Wallymart. It is actually for grills. I even went to the local hardware store to buy some and it wasn't as good as the paint I got from Wally.
