lump char

    I picked up some lump charcole today, but have never used that type before. Is lump much different from regular char? Just wondering if it burnt up faster, the same or lasted longer. Or is there was any other differences that I should know about... thanks!!

    In my expierience lump charcoaal burns hotter than biquettes. It unfortunately seems to burn up a little faster too.[​IMG]

    Lump does burn a bit hotter than briquettes, it also burns a little faster. Some say it also burns cleaner as it does not use anything like binders.

    What kind do you get?

    Probably is.... In a brown bag with brown stripes on it..

    I also believe it does burn hotter but just a litte faster but I also think it taste better when cooked with than briquettes...

    Depending on what kind of lump you get, there can be considerably less ash. I ran the Kingsford Briquettes in my WSM 22.5 on a shoulder and the entire bottom was filled with ash, so much so that I had to constantly keep moving the charcoal around so it would get air and hold temp. I have also gone through (2) 10lb bags of Royal Oak lump on another shoulder(around 15 hours) and only had about 1" total of ash after the smoke in the bottom.

    I'm using some king gold(green bag) from menards. It seems to have very littel ash, and also seems to give me hotter temps, with better burn times than I was getting from kingston char. The better burn times might be the difference from my new smoker, and the ECB knock off I was using. This one has two vents, and top, and two on bottom, giving me great ventilation for a good burn.

    I always use lump charcoal. I find it produces a lot less ash than briquettes do. Also, unlike the vast majority of briquettes, lump doesn't have all sorts of additives like coal dust, weird binders...
