Hello from Buffalo, NY

  1. Hello all, I've been lurking around this forum for awhile and thought it was time to sign on.  I originally got a taste of smoking from my grandfather (our original Swede), who had a smoker he had built out of an old fuel oil home heating tank.  All he would smoke was fish, either ones he had caught or stuff his buddies from the Viking club would bring him.  We always had some around the holidays.

About 15 years ago a buddy and I decided to build our own out of an old double door refrigerator frame, one with a freezer on the bottom.  We stripped it down to the metal and fabricated a propane burner for it in the bottom freezer section.  We made a ton of venison jerky and sausage in that thing, but it was a bear to keep the temperature steady.

I'm more domesticated now, so to speak, and haven't done any smoking in over 10 years.  I'm determined to get back into it now, but I'm a slow buyer, and I need to know everything before I decide on a purchase.  Which is what brought me here to begin with.  I'm amazed by the information and the knowledge level here, and I can't thank you folks enough for taking the time to share your knowledge so that (relative) rookies like me can hopefully skip some of the learning curve.

Looking forward to figuring out the best way to go, then sharing some of the experience here.

Off site links are not allowed here at SMF per Jeff. Not that you have done anything wrong....just a little bit of FYI for new members!

You have already discovered the wealth of information here. I only started smoking last fall and any success I have had is largely from the generosity of the members of this forum.

I look forward to you getting a unit and starting smoking. More posts with pictures will make this forum even better.

  8. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.  I appreciate the time and effort you folks put into this.
