I have acess to tons of oak for free but any other wood I have to buy
Oak is just fine.
A lot of people use oak. Some use oak for heat then add other for flavor.
Smoke away sir! I use oak with a mix of hickory, sometimes pecan, sometimes mesquite, but I have also smoked with straight oak.
I also have access to quite a bit of oak and it's my go-to wood for the majority of my smoking. I will mix it with hickory or mesquite depending on what I'm trying at the time.
Hell yes Oak! That is all I use!
Make sure it's seasoned though...don't want any creosote! That goes for any wood!
Guess I need to get hubby to start splitting and stacking oak to let it season. He does site prep after the logging crew finishes a spot and they only go after the pine so he pushes over and burns everything else and of course here in Florida there's oaks everywhere
Oak is a terrible wood for smoking with. If you have any on your property taking up valuable space, I'll be happy to have you send it to me for proper disposal.
We use for the most part only oak from the trees we trim on the property. Ours is usually aged, but not always dry. We do not have a place set up yet to keep it dry. I do have a container where that has a lid, but the bottom is mesh like and it seems to do a good job of keeping it dryish. Another wood that he may find is some citrus. I really like the mix of orange and oak. I know North Florida will have pecan trees in some areas, so keep an eye out for those as well. Free wood is a good thing!!!
