After much thought and looking around I think I am going to get a GOSM propane smoker.

Good decision/bad decision?

Where is the best place to buy?

It's a good decision. I'd start on your local Craigslist. I got one wide body for $40 and a 2nd for $35, with a full tank of propane. If you have no luck there, check Walmart for old stock or Bass Pro Shops. I'm sure someone closer to your home than Az will chime in with a better suggestion, but that's my $0.02.

First off it's a good decision I have 2. I got mine at wally world for a good price. I haven't thought about craigs list but give it a try. Around me we have heard some not so good things about craigs list. But that northern fl.

Thanks All!!

Do you recommend the 16K BTU or 18K BTU model? Looks like those are both the same size (talking about the link above to Bass Pro Shops online).

Here are the differences.

18,000 **BTU36"H x 24"W x 16"D $199.99

The second one is the big block 24"wide and 18,000 btu
The 1st is only 16" wide and 16,000 btu

Size would depend on your need. But you can never have too much room lol

Ahhh... didn't notice that. Thanks so much. Size sure does matter, at least that is what my girlfriends always said...

No really -- The extra space is a huge deal. I have been using the ECB and I cannot put a full rack on the grills without cutting them. Nor can I cook a ton for large gatherings. So I would pay the extra $30 just for the increased space. Thanks for pointing it out!!

BTW -- I purchased the GOSM from Bass Pro Shop online today! So it is on its way. Says it will be here before the weekend, so I know what I will be doing on Saturday!

Can someone give me some hints on the best way to break it in? Just rub oil on the inside and let it burn for a few hours? Or is there a better way?

Good choice GOSM. The bigger the better is what I recommend. AS for seasoning, you can use rendered bacon fat to paint the insides with. (use a brush). Or just spray the inside with Pam. Then heat it up for a few hours at 250 or so.

I bought a GOSM last year. I have really had great success with it. By the way don't know if you like to tinker or not but there are some easy mods you can do to get the most out of your new smoker. I keep looking for more that I can do to further customize. If interested check the site for previous threads on the mods. Otherwise I can show you what I've done.

Quick question on the GOSM. How much fuel do you go through in a smoke? Will a tank only get you 2 smoke sessions? I thought I read that somewhere.

Also, how good are gas smokers at maintaining a temperature? Do you constantly have to adjust the flame? Is there some sort of thermostat that monitors that for you as a modification? Just curious. Thanks!

Matt

Yes please tell me what you have done. I did all of the mods on my ECB so I am up for making them. Please let me know. Thanks.
