    Help with temp.

never mind.  I looked at your profile and I see you have a pic of the intake on there.  I wonder if the intake is too high on the side of the firebox.  If it were lower it might allow more air to get under the fire and breath a little better.  I also put a grate in the firebox on mine to allow...

Not sure what the problem is.  I would be interested to see what you have for a air intake on the firebox.  That would be my first guess.  Not enough intake.  Looks like you probably have plenty of exhaust.

Has anyone built a smoker where the smoke box was underneath or behind the cook chamber and the smok

The fire box and the cooking chamber are made out of 16 in pipe.  The cooking chamber is around 40 inches long and the fire box is around 18 inches long.  Imo, 16 in pipe is almost too small of a diameter for the cooking chamber.  I works okay for the firebox.  For me 24 in  would be ideal.  The...

Has anyone built a smoker where the smoke box was underneath or behind the cook chamber and the smok

Imo, the thicker metal does help hold the heat a little better.  Thinnner metal will burn out a little quicker too.  I built a smoker similar to what you have in mind.  I don't have any dampers between the fire box and cooking chamber, but I regulate the temperature from a damper on the fire...

    Fuel for Smoking

i use kingsford bricks to get started then add in small sticks of hickory and oak. I am somewhat required to use kingsford. my brother works there in the Belle, Mo plant. On the up side, i get it for FREE! I have found bricks alone don't keep the heat high enough in my homebuilt rig.

that look pretty nice. I am a really big fan of the home built smokers myself. I always take a little more pride in something I built myself.

    Show Off Your Rig!

I built this mostly out of stuff given to me along the way. probably don't have $100.00 total in the whole thing. It has since been painted but I definately want some wheels on it.

    Stainless Steel firebox

In my opinion, that is a shade on the small side but probably big enough. My firebox is a 16 in. pipe and it works out pretty well. Keep us posted on how it works out for ya.
