Hi All Would be OK to use unseasoned wood, to start a coal bed?

Then use apple/cherry splits for flavor and heat.

No, it will not burn cleanly and it will be next to impossible to establish a bed of coals.

Starting with lump charcoal is your best option, but you can use briquettes as well.
