Don't bother with Dave's idea of upper and lower inlets. It doesn't work. FYI. I have built over 1000+ pits to date and don't use a a calculator. Fire box to cook chamber needs to be as large as you can reasonably make it.
Wow glad you have been busy with the new pit. I have also been real busy and am not on this forum much. Been hard at work making new pits. Heres some 500 gallon bbq pits I building atm.
Great looking food !!! Thanks for the post.
Seal the main door (the temporary works but won't last) Don't go ape shit mad and weld it solid like half the ones you see on the web. Less welding means less warping. I stitch it about every 5 ". It was full of gunk as the stack was not able to draw a vacuum with that narly door leaks. Run...
Here's something I managed to stick together this week. Used a mix of chewing gum, dirt and hair off a pig to glue it together. Probably going to fall apart before you finish reading it.
I second Dave on that. I don't see anything good coming from a valve between the cook chamber and firebox.
Worry more about the main door sealing 100% will have more effect than anything.
Not sure the trailer is up to task for a 500 gallon smoker. With firebox and grates you will be at about 750kg. Personally I would build a more sturdy trailer.
Draw a pic with what you are wanting. (insulated? Square/round?) basic dimensions
Have a look at some of the crap I have cobbled together in previous posts. Built a bunch of RF verticals
