There is a reason the GFCI was installed and most likely due to local code. They can however become weak over time and start to trip when they shouldn't. My advise to is replace it with a new GFCI and see how it goes.

I am looking at GFCI WiFi units. Also thinking of putting a GFCI breaker in then I can do a regular outlet. Both will meet code.
