Dave:  When I say elbow I'm talking about a long sweep elbow not the typical type of squared off elbow. This would be a sweeping effect in not bottling up in the cc.

What wall thickness do you use for the smoke stack is there a min. or max for thisI know the pipe has to heat up to pull a draft

Dave if I don't build a plenum and do the alternate stack do I use the total  length that I get when I use your calculator and how far off the grate is it placed

Whether you use either stack idea..... plenum or alternate, for good air flow you want about 36" of stack above the cook chamber...

The food grate can cause air flow problems if the stack is too close... food block air flow, the metal screen blocks air flow... soooooo, adjust the exhaust
intake accordingly.... something like the picture works well....

Volume in cubic inches X 0.022 or 0.017 = Exhaust Stack Volume in cubic inches, above the CC.... (ESV)
(The increase in volume ~30% shows a dramatic improvement in equalized temperatures across the cooking surface... edit 6/19/15 )

Exhaust Calculation..

ESV in cubic inches_____________________________ ... = Stack Length in inches (36" +/-)
0.7854 X Stack Diameter X Stack Diameter

Adjust the diameter of the stack, until the proper length is achieved... be sure to measure the actual internal diameter of the pipe used..
this is for round stacks only..

so if math is right then I have a 23.65 inch stack from the top of chamber with a 4" stack

13508 cc X  0.022 = 297.198

0.7854 X 4= 3.1416 X 4 = 12.5664

297.198 divided by 12.5664 = 23.65

setting it in CC about 2"

The stack height plays a significant role in draft... For peace of mind, I would have the exhaust stack about 36" above the CC...

So your Calculation spread sheet says 4" exhaust 18.23" long

Feldons Say's 18.41

The new calculations say 23.65"

Now you say 36"

Are we finding new calcs to make our smokers better is this why so many variables

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO confused just tell me a length to make it and I will do that. I want to get it right the first go around

4" X 34" above the CC..... then add whatever to go inside the CC...

Exhaust stack question. I have a 4" square tube that is 3 5/8" ID if I use it what length do i make it. I also have 4" ID round pipe to use what will flow better. I know Dave say's 34" on round stock

It's done took 5 months but 2 of that was having prostate cancer ]surgery and not being able to lift. Season it 2 times then paint and temp back up to 350 to cure the paint. Holds heat great and no leaks. Door I Had rolled out of left over 1/4" tank piece warp to much.
