I'm new to smoking. Been bbqing on the weber for quite some time now I'm attacking another animal. I been reading lots of threads and got some great info that I'm looking forward to using. I got a Oklahoma Joe highland. I know not the best but good enough for what I want it for. I saw on a episode Myron Mixon had on TV where he had a drum that he put wood to burn to create hot coals to throw in the smoker instead of whole pieces. Any ideas on what the was or how to make one? Don't need a large one since I don't have a large put yet.

Just build or buy a fire pit.

Although it's just as easy to start your fire with charcoal, then when you get a nice coal bed, switch to wood splits.
