    Thanks @tallbm. I think it's just those 2 transistors, so if I can get my hands on a couple I'll give that a whirl first. I was looking at Auber's, and then got really excited about the opensource/diy HeaterMeter, but it looks like the store is out of commission and there hasn't been any news...

    Rigged the switch together temporarily to see if that was the culprit and still didn't get the element to heat up, so I kept digging and found this on the bottom circuit board. Doesn't look right to me. Seems these boards don't exist for sale, either :(
