Greetings to you all!
My name is Jamie and I'm a starting "smoke-a-holic"...I've always enjoyed the taste of smoked foods and now I've decided to take on actually doing my own.
I'm familiar to the forum type of thing (I belong to a couple of motorcycle forums) so I'll be in and out asking ??'s here and there, picking the brains of you master smoker's that so kindly provide insight on this wonderful art.

I don't have a smoker yet but I've got it narrowed down to a gas unit and I'm about 90% sold on one of the GOSM units that I found online at Wal-Mart.
That's about it for now...so thanks for the advice I'm sure I'll receive, and keep the smoke rollin'!

Welcome BF -

The GSOM a good unit you enjoy it. In the mean time do sign up for the 5 day e-course and check Jeff's PDF smoking ebook as well. There's also a GOSM review down on the botton of the page somewhere you might want to look at as well.

Welcome to the forums! This is the friendliest place on the net Bar None!

Have fun smoking, post TONS of pics, ask questions, and answer any you might know the answer to.

Again Welcome to SMF!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I think today I'll go look at some local stores to compre smokers in person and narrow my choices down. Like I said, I'm about 90% for gas but a coal/wood unit still hasn't been ruled out.
I have a Char-Broil stainless gas grill that I absolutely love, and I'm used to cooking with gas.....but....there is still a more distinct smell and flavor when using coal....so

Thanks for the advice on the e-course as well. I signed up for that right after I registered, so now I'm on day 3

.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and as soon as I get my smoker (and some meat in it) I'll post some pics. All I have is pics of my bike and since this is a smoking forum, I'm sure you don't want to see pics of some guy's bike

Welcome BigFokker!
I saw the movie.......................... surely not.
Anyhow. If you decide on the GOSM gasser you will like it. I have one, easy to use and control temps. Also have a GOSM 3005C charcoal smoker.
DJDebi turned me on to putting a small amount of charcoal in the wood box of the gasser to add that flavor. Something to think about.
Enjoy and smoke on!

Just to be clear about what I'm looking at, is this the GOSM that everyone speaks about? http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=3342513
If so, I'm sorta down to justifying the extra $30 for the "wide" model tha's only giving me approx 4" more in the width

Is that a deal maker/breaker? My main thing would be fitting full racks of ribs in it without having to cut them in half. I did read somewhere about a rib rack so maybe that would accomodate them in a folded sort of fashion.

Anyhoo, back to the cooker...I did read somewhere that there was a more "industrial" version of the GOSM and that's why I was questioning my choice of the Wal-mart version...hmm...this is all so confusing

Have fun!

Welcome to the forum. I can't help with gas smoker info, but whatever smoker you choose the friendly folks here will be able to help.

Spend the $30 for the extra 4", you won't be be sorry. Just draw out the measurements of both and compare, then remember you have shelf brackets using up some of that space. one poster found the bigger one marked down to $100 and it rang up at $60, some guys get all the luck
