wood for fire 101

ok im new here but i am a carpenter so wood 101 it dont matter what wood trees are like us they have hard an soft parts. so if ur new to wood. look at it is there a knot in it knots are hard will burn but will take long time. look at ur fire you got good coal bed? then it should be ok. small fire an your trying to keep good temp. not much coal bed dont use it yet. look at end of your split is grain tight or is there more of a lose looking grain? a softer looking grain or rings should burn nice. look at what your going to burn. look at your fire. im way new to this but i can tell from the chunk of wood what it will do. learn to read your wood pilefirst one is hard will smolder more then burn 2nd one look at grain rings its more open softer it will burn nice an its a wood burner some pieces burn alot faster so you have to stay on top of your fire duh
