Wood deck on trailer mounted 500 gallon smoker?

My trailer that will be getting the smoker mounted to it currently has a wood plank deck. Could I keep ot except for where the fire box will sit? I keep pondering this. I priced the expanded metal that stands up, and for a piece 16'x6' would cost about $300. I would MUCH rather just keep the wood deck I already have...

 I did however even consider just removing the planks that will be under the smoker and firebox and leaving the rest. I just don't want the deck to start smoking eventually!
 
check out local tractor auctions...sometimes you can get oilfoeld catwalk for cheap (I have oil field catwalk on mine...I love it)
