Wood chips

Should I soak my wood chips for an electric smoker? If so how long should I soak them and how long should the be heated up before I place my meat in? New to using an electric smoker.

When I used chips/chunks I did not soak them. I found that the water doesn't really penetrate the wood and it slows down the wood from producing smoke. The water will evaporate causing steam (which looks like smoke) before actual smoke will appear.

I'd agree with the above. Used to be a soaker very early on and then quit. I also prefer chunks over chips but sometimes only chips will work in your unit. Many guys will not use the water pan either....depends on you.

Exactly, you'll see it steaming first.  The secondary combustion can't even occur while it's wet.
