Should I soak my wood chips for an electric smoker? If so how long should I soak them and how long should the be heated up before I place my meat in? New to using an electric smoker.

When I used chips/chunks I did not soak them. I found that the water doesn't really penetrate the wood and it slows down the wood from producing smoke. The water will evaporate causing steam (which looks like smoke) before actual smoke will appear.

I see this is your first post here so when you get a minute would you do us a favor and swing by "Roll Call" and introduce yourself so we can give you a proper SMF Welcome, Thanks!

I'd agree with the above. Used to be a soaker very early on and then quit. I also prefer chunks over chips but sometimes only chips will work in your unit. Many guys will not use the water pan either....depends on you.

    No reason to soak IMO.

Exactly, you'll see it steaming first.  The secondary combustion can't even occur while it's wet.

Best way...order an AMNPS for Todd here and you'll end your headaches. Just sayin'.

    Have fun and. . .
