Depends on how long your smoking. I start with about a cup of chips and add alittle every 30min or so to get a little bed of ashes built up.When i add chips it only a 1/2 cup at most.

I would do like raptor said to. You want that thin smoke that you can hardly see sometimes. Just remember if you can smell smoke your smoking.

I did a tip roast today it turned out good, but i used wood chips in my MES-30 and when i was done i looked in the wood tray and barely used any wood chips. about 10 percent was used up. I had the smoker up to 225. Just wondering if there's anything wrong and why it happened.

To all you MES guys, forget the wood chips & get a AMNS. They go together like peanut butter & jelly. TBS till dawn.

I haven't used wood chips since I got my AMNS smokers...

I've got a MES 30 and have smoked a few shoulders and picnics. Each time I smoke the wood chips just turn black and don't really turn to ash. I'm cooking at 225 and using dry chips. I get the thin blue-ish smoke and replace the chips when they stop smoking, every hour and a half or so. I feel like I'm wasting chips since they don't burn down to ash. Any suggestions?

I've had good luck with soaking my chips for a while then putting them inbetween my heating element being careful not to get the chips on the hot element of course and add more about every hour or so and they turn to ash everytime. Hope this helps bud, Have a good one and smoke it up! Zach
