Just a word from a complete newbie - after showing him this website, my husband surprised me by buying a small smoker today and we are starting our BBQ season with beer can chicken.  It's pouring rain, but he is determined to try this out.  The biggest hitch so far is keeping the dogs in the house.  Monday is ribs!  A good Memorial Day holiday to you all.

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. Congrats on the new smoker and good luck with the smoke

Welcome to the SMF family, bassetmom!

If it's a charcoal fired smoker you speak of, it will take a fairly hot fire to overcome the rain and/or wind, especially if it's a horizontal with side fire box. Most propane fired rigs will handle just about anything mother nature can throw at you. Electric can have trouble putting out enough BTU's to build and hold temps if the chips are down. In any case, if you can keep it dry and out of the wind, you'll be stacking the deck in your favor.

Have fun with the new toy, good luck, great smokes, and enjoy the eats!

Welcome to the party! Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night will keep a q'er form doing their thing. What kind of cooker did you get?
