I just suffered through an 8+ hour ordeal after getting a bug from a hacker while uploading pics this morning. Never even got a warning pop-up from microsoft's joke for protection. Anyway, I managed to copy my files for back-up, but that was all the bug would let me do...format and reload everything + 98 updates from HP...thought I'd never get finished with this mess. No financial data or transactions have been completed or stored in my CPU, so the jerk got nadda, diddly...

I gotta get a download of Firefox's browser if my fouled up machine will let me...can't upload from photobucket to SMF, as IE now won't let me run 2 tabs or seperate browsers either......bummer. Also, I need to dowload C-Cleaner again.

I'll get back to my butts/ABTs thread ASAP...what a PITA!

Thanks

Eric

Yeah, Werdwolf...strangest darn thing I ever saw in my life...and Windows Defender (firewall) and the Windows Live Onecare didn't have a clue what was going on either. This is the first time this machine has been infected.

I've got Firefox browser running now and have to relearn how to use it, but dang is this browser lightning fast...I love it!!!!

My son recommended I go to AVG antivirus, so it's running now, and set for updating the definitions every 4 hours...not taking any chances again.

I tell ya what, just when you think everything is going just peachy...BOOM!!!!! It's just that quick.

I'll get things figured out here in the next few days...it's a pain that that I have to change all the personal settings and such to get this machine personalized again.

We'll be OK now, though

I feel your pain! Got what my son thinks is a worm this weekend, calls itself Internet 2010-says my system is infected and I need to order their fix for 50 bucks! AS IF!! They just want my credit card and whatever else they can get! May have to wipe the hard drive, wouldn't allow system restore either. It was fast too, in a movie web site. So my IT guy is looking at it but I sure will be looking at Firefox too.

I think the free version of malwarebytes.org does a good job of getting rid of this one

I think IE8 was your problem, especially if you had adobe flash plugins, there are holes in them. Thats why you use chrome ofr firefox if at all possible.

Just an FYI...I work at a computer repair shop at our isp.....and we recommend microsoft security essetnials and avira anti vir as our top 2 anti virus applications for free. Microsoft has done really really well recently in tests, and in our own lab tests its 2nd only to avira.

Just my .02, sometimes when there is holes in IE there isn't alot any av can do about it, especially if its a specific perso ndoing it and not one of the generic worms riding around out there.

I use AVG and keep Malwarebytes handy. I also use Crapcleaner and cleanup, they are free.

Well let me agree with the problems with Windows Defender. Here is another issue with it....
It will continously run in the backround, which wouldn't be a bad thing but.......... most of the time it uses most of your cpu's memory. The pc that I am running it on is about 5 yrs old...
I am still trying to find a way to uninstall it.
