...an "oven temp" or "smoker box" temp thermometer? Or does the probe need to be stuck in something?

I don't have any of those dial style oven thermometers at the moment and I want to run a check/test in my MES.

Thanks!

Yes it will work just fine.... Some stick it thru a piece of wood and others use a potatoe..........Happy smokes...

Best answer some do...some don't. My one with remote does, my other williams-sanoma tops out at 190 or so. BTW best way I have seen to get a good reading inside is to push the probe thru a potato and lay it on the grate. Metal on metal reads too high. When done toss the tater.

I just drilled a hole in a chunk of wood and set it on the grate and it works just fine. Then I have one for the meat too.

How much of a temp effect do you think it has directly setting it on the grate? It didn't seem to make a difference when I double checked my readings by setting it in the oven in the kitchen (again, I'm using an MES, which is basically an outdoor oven with a smoke box anyway)
