Just found a Brinkmann Vertical Single door smoker at yard sale talked them down to 15 bucks....(if my father in law wasn't helping i could have got it for 10)  I never have smoked anything before.  been reading some threads I already wish it was a split door model.  Anyways what can we do on the cheap to maybe have some fun with it...and always come back to the fact that,  what the hay,  it was only $15.  Planning on getting the Veggie wok to replace the bottom coal pan....will be using play sand with foil cover for barrier.  looking at tighten the seals with maybe some big green egg felt...Seen some have put fire bricks on top...and New Thermostat....These are some of the things I have read....Mind you, after reading i haven't felt like even trying to cook in it till some of these things are done....The door really bothers me but what do I know...NOTHING...so should I just let it go? or is there a mod I should consider....any help is appreciated....Like i have said before I don't claim to know anything about smokin....so plain talk....thanks again....

I wouldn't worry about any mods! Just get yourself some lump coals and some wood chunks and throw some meat on your new toy. I don't feel all the mods are necessary. The only thing i would invest in would be a good grill thermometer and a probe thermometer! The smoker doesn't have to be sealed up tight like a submarine to put out awesome food.

Rev Del,
Welcome, from southern Ohio, to the best forum on the internet if you are looking to learn how to BBQ/smoke/brine/cure/inject. Well you get the picture if you can do it to something you put on a plate to eat then someone here has probably done it. Use the search bar at the top of the page and you will be led to the answer to most every question you can think of. If you don't find the answer there then just post it and someone will chime in with there opinion on the subject.
Brooksy is right it will cook your food the way it is!!, The only thing about sealing it up is that it is much more easy to control your temp.
Good Luck!!
Keep Smokin!!!
