I have been smoking with a Chargriller Duo w/side firebox since the summer. I figured out I needed to do a few mods, which I did and it has worked out ok. I have at least learned the basics with it. Well, I won my fantasy football league and now have a little extra cash and am ready to upgrade my smoker. I have looked at a few different smokers and the 2 that stand out to me are the Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe. The ability of these ceramic grills/smokers to use so little charcoal (compared to my smoker) and hold the temperature for very long periods of time sounds awesome! I know they are pricey, but if they are as good as they sound I would be willing to save for a while and get one. So, my question is if you had anywhere between $500-$1000 to spend what charcoal smoker would you buy? Also, I do not need a smoker with a huge capacity. Cooking a couple briskets at a time is more than enough.

Looking forward to hearing anybody's thoughts. Thanks!

Buy a Weber Smokey mountain will work just as good as a Big Green egg.  Might not grill like one but smokes just as well.  If you are inclined make a Ugly Drum Smoker and spend the rest on meat and accessories.  I have gone over 24 hours and a constant temp using my UDS and have heard of long smoke times using the WSM.  If you must have a Kamodo style smoke look into a Bubba Keg.

Between the two you mention I would probably go with the Big Green Egg just because it is more well known.  There are quite a few other makes of smokers that are insulated and very efficient though.  However most won't achieve the high temps of the ceramics.

I would change everything and go gas and get a Smoke Vault 24". It's simple and easy to use and the temp stays where you put it too.
