At lowes currently looking at scratch n dent 526421 for 200.00
Or a brand new 0673792

Which one do I want ?

Are both elements user replaceable?

I don't want to get a bad one. I've read in the forums some are more preferable than the others

Help!

Those don't sound like MES Model numbers, but the two links below should help you decide which is which:

Masterbuilt Smokers (Bear's Thoughts & Findings)

MES Generation Number Recognition Pictures & Pics (Digital Units)

They are the numbers on the box at lowes at least. From what I can see I have a gen 2 front control with top left corner vent instead of the side vent.

Those must be Lowes numbers.

MES Model numbers normally start with "2007" and end with the year they are manufactured, such as "20078715" or 20078716".

The best way to tell is by the inside.

If it has a slanted drip plate that is higher on the right than the left, with a small water pan that hangs in the left end of that plate, that is a Gen #2.  That's the one to stay away from if possible.

Those two links I gave you above explain everything.

Here they are again:

FWIW - I love the Masterbuilt customer service....

I have an MES 40 that is a little over a year old.  Bought it at Sams.  One time, after a smoke, about a month ago, I forgot to put the meat thermometer back in the smoker.  It rained.  The meat thermometer was fried.  100% my fault.

I emailed Masterbuilt to ask where to find a replacement because I could not find it on their website.  They emailed back right away and asked me when I bought the smoker, what happened, etc.  I explained the above.  They sent me a new thermometer AND control panel free of charge.
