Which MES 30

Discussion in 'Electric Smokers' started by randytubbycreek, Dec 3, 2015.

  1. So I have read to many posts, and have myself feeling a bit lost.

I am wanting to by an electric smoker and it seems the Masterbuilts are decent units. However with the different generations I'm left a little confused.

At Home Depot they have several. In general I was thinking I don't need windows nor remote so I would choose the $150 MES digital 20070910 over the $245 20070411.

Then they also have the 20078715 for $206 it is not digital but $56 more. Is this the new model? is it better?

I'm looking to keep costs low, have a reliable unit that will smoke meat. I have pork, beef, goat and deer in the freezer waiting.

    Please help.

The cheaper model ending in #10 is the Gen 1.  That's the one you want.
  3. So the MES 30 ver 1.0 is better then 2.0 but I thought there was a 2.5?

With the ver 1.0 I thought I read about mods that would need to be done to it?
  4. So Amazon has the MES 30 #910 For$150. It may just be a stock photo but I thought the square controller was the old ver 1.0 and while a good unit if the element went out you had to replace a whole bunch of stuff.  Am I wrong on this?

Do you have an Ace Hardware near you? The 20070910 (with a rounded top controller) is on sale for $129.95 including a smoker cover,. sausage rack and a rib rack. It's limited to stock on hand in any individual store but the sale goes through 12/26.

MB has made this very confusing. My understanding is that when you see the 910 advertised on Amazon (where I bought mine) it's the square controller. The MES 30 advertised on Ace has the rounded controller. So I think the merchants post the stock photos for the actual smokers they're selling. I've never seen the newer controller up close so I don't know how the layout is different. Bear's told me that it operates the same way as the square controller and, except for the controller design, both versions are the same.
  8. I ordered the one on Amazon, It will be here monday. Can't Wait!

What first, in the freezer I have pork (all cuts), venison, beef, goat andchicken

After you season the smoker, my vote is a pork butt.  Easy and straight-forward.

I've never smoked venison or goat, but smoked venison sounds really yummy for dinner.

If you want dinner to be ready fairly quickly and you want to stick with the smoker classics, smoke baby back or St. Louis style ribs. B-backs can be ready in five hours, STL about six. Up to you whether you foil or not.. Pork loin would also finish up in just a few hours since it's so lean.

If you don't mind smoking all day I'd go with beef brisket over pork shoulder/butt only because I prefer beef  brisket to pulled pork.
