Really depends on your priorities. I have the Maverick 732 and a
thermapen. The 732 is a good ballpark indicator. It's not really that precise, accurate or fast, but it lets me know what's generally happening. I'm down to one probe as the pit probe died about a year after I bought it. I should replace it, but I'm a little irritated that I have to and have been reluctant to give them any more of my money. The
thermapen is precise, accurate and fast, and it lets me know EXACTLY what's happening. I can tell the difference in the temps at the center of a pork butt vs an inch below the surface, for example.
As for the wireless aspect of the 732, I could easily live without it. I did use the alarm once on an overnight smoke years ago, but that was really just because I could. I have a fairly good idea of what's going to happen and when, so I'm gonna be at the smoker when I need to be anyway.
If I had it all to do over again, I'd probably get something from
Thermoworks. The $59 Chef alarm to monitor the cooker and a
Thermopop to check on the meat would work pretty nicely. They also make dual probe units in the $200 range. Yes, they're expensive and yes, you can get similar functionality for much less money. But at the end of the day, their products work well and keep right on working long after the cheaper ones start having problems. And by the time you've replaced the probes 4 or 5 times on the maverick you've ended up spending a similar amount of money on an inferior product.
