What makes the neighbors drool?

  1. I have now used the smoker twice. I have really enjoyed doing it and the food has been fantastic. I have, however, been disappointed. I expected the meat to carry a heavenly scent into the wind and make my neighbors drool. What is there that smells the best? I have heard brisket smells great.

    Short believe me after a few cooks it will flow and they will come.

    I just mentioned to my wife how heavenly the smell of a rub that is heavy with paprika is. Love the smell that creates combined with some apple wood

    scg-What kind of woods are you smoking with? I like to use a mix of hickory and cherry with most meats I smoke. My neighbors come over to check things out whenever they see the thin blue smoke rising.
     
  6. I have been using a lot of pecan and a bit of hickory. You could smell the wood burning, but I thouhgt the meat itself would smell great while it smoked. The wood did smell nice.

    shortchubbyguy, I'm not sure what part of AZ you're from, but if you never grew up with the smell of burning wood from wood stoves, fireplaces, etc - it's something that get's into your inner self. Then when you grow up with smoking and grilling in the family and the neighborhood - the two senses come together.

    You probably won't truly smell the meat so much as the wood smoking.

    Mix your heavy smoke wood with a lighter smoke wood, especially when the smoke is traveling in the direction of the neighbors (the ones you like) then make it a point to smoke something just for them. The next time they smell that smoke - they'll know what it is and what it means -FOOD! Then they'll drool and you might even have someone stop by "just to visit". When that happens you'll know what makes the neighbors drool.

    After that they are your puppets.. burn some wood just for giggles and grins.

  8. PigCicles, You've got a little bit of a rotten streak in you. Me too. I certainly will burn wood just to mess with the neighbors.

    I know what you're talking about with the smell of wood burning. I am originally from Columbus, Ohio. I grew up next to a campfire either late night catfishing or just going camping with the other crazies.

    I guess what is needed is to feed the neighbors so they'll know what that smoke means. No worries, I just put a Boston Butt and a yardbird (I think it might have been Clapton) in the freezer to await my next couple of days off from work.

    I work a compressed work week, so my weekends are all either 3 or 4 days long. That means I'll have plenty of time to really play with my smoker.

    You can make a number of meats that "smell great", but a secret that I use when I want to impart some flavor into the air is to spritz down the inner walls of my smoker with apple juice/bourbon or maybe Worcestshire/beer. Also the fat from the meat dripping onto a hot surface will sizzle and render scented goodness for all to enjoy!

    SCG, one thing that smells almost as good as the food is to marinade the meat in a mix of soy sauce, worchest, and red wine. Or pour some in a drip pan or sprits with it. That w/hickory & apple smoke is better than..............well not quite better than "that". The neighbors will be there soon enough. "If you smoke it, they will come."
     
  11. Yeah, ya just have to work on their Pavlovian conditioning, (as soon as they smell smoke…they’ll come a sniffin!) Alot of OMG! Is That Ever Tasty, MMMMMM! Yeah Baby! Run around your yard, Chase the wife, fight over the food! Klink beer bottles, Lottsa Blues music! Hot sauce competitions, Wings! (wings smell good) Owwwwwoooo! :shock: :oops:

    When I first started, the neighbors could smell the smoke and came over because they thought my house was on fire. Now they know what it means.

    My neighbors drool everytime I cook outside. They only cook hotdogs and hamburgers and plain by the look of it. They really go nuts when I do a teriaki steak or chicken.

    To cold for them to figure out what I'm doing under my little styrofoam iglloo though. hehehe

  14. I smoked another boston butt today. I'm gonna make more pulled pork sandwiches. The family loved it last time. I will give some to my neighbors this time too. Next time they smell the smoke they'll know.

    My timing was very lucky too. About 10 minutes after I pulled it off of the smoker the sky opened up and it snowed very hard here in Phoenix! Mark your calander. Heavy snow in Phoenix, Arizona a.k.a. "The Valley of the Sun".

  16. The whole reason that I moved here is because I can't stand cold weather. Mother Nature is just being flat out rude. I'm supposed to be calling my family back in Ohio and driving them crazy with weather reports from Phoenix this time of year. I hope she'll get with the program soon.

    Mother Nature is a fickle mother..... almost as fickle as the golfing godess. She gives and then when you need it the most, she taketh away...........
