What is it?

    This is my dad's grill at our old house.I've never used the attachment on the side and I don't know what it is. any clues

    I've got two boston butts in the back of it right now. It's the first time we've ever used it and he, my dad, has lived in that house for over 10 years. I Patched it up with some galvanized sheet I found laying around, She's holding steady at 225 degrees.

    It reminds me of a big built-in grill/smoker/oven I saw in a park shelterhouse in Florida.
  7. This is an old style vertical grill. You'd build the fire on both sides in the grates, then a basket that clamshelled the meat together hangs sideways from the 2 hooks at the top, with the handle of the baskets pointing outward.  Google "vertical grills" and you can see images of various kinds that are made and used.  

    Fine old-style brick BBQ pit you have there, glad that you are trying it out and bringing it back to life. Show us more pics of you using it.

    10.5 hours later , temp fluctuated between 200-275. Good 1st try I think.
